Drilling – Upstream Construction
Upstream construction involves removing oil from the ground; this consists of using a drill bit to create a well for oil and natural gas production. After identifying and determining where to drill, our workers clear and prepare the site for evacuation.
During site preparation, our construction workers clear a road to the site and level the specific worksite where drilling occurs. Throughout jobsite preparation, we keep all safety hazards in the forefront of our minds, including:
- Pedestrian traffic and ground personnel
- Buried pipelines and cables that could be electrical, flammable, or toxic
- Construction vehicle traffic
- Inclement weather and its impact on the terrain
The construction project doesn’t end after excavating. Equipment such as cranes, rig-up trucks, and forklifts assemble and prepare the rig for drilling. This process includes:
- Setting the substructure and the rig floor
- Installing handrails, guardrails, stairs, walkways, and ladders
- Installing auxiliary equipment like the catwalk and pipe racks
- Performing safety inspections to prevent falling, slipping, or tripping
Pipelines – Midstream Construction
Midstream construction involves collecting and transporting crude oil, natural gas, and refined products. Gas pipeline projects typically include moving the fuel from the site to surrounding households and businesses. Our oil and gas construction process breaks down into six stages:
- Staging areas – Used to store materials and equipment, such as sandbags
- Clear cutting the row – Clear cut the pipeline and haul off large trees
- Excavating – Dig the trench
- Pipe transport – Lay pipe sections
- Obstacles – Uncover obstacles that may stop construction, such as roads and streams
- Testing and restoration – Verify pipeline integrity
After our workers dig trenches and transport proper materials to the staging area, the pipes are laid down beside the trenches. Pipe sections are bent using bending and welding tools, sand-blasting, and coated joints to prevent corrosion.
Like upstream drilling, hazards at this stage include the local environment (streams and wetlands), land terrain, inclement weather, and equipment. Explosions are a deep concern at this stage because a lot of welding takes place. Refinery Plants – Downstream Construction
Downstream construction involves manufacturing, refining, and selling natural gas products derived from crude oil. Although it’s not as hands-on as pipeline transportation, site preparation, and rigging, our construction workers still play a critical role in the downstream construction of the oil and natural gas pipeline.
